SUBJECT: Choosing a Best Man

My girlfriend and I just got engaged and I am in the process of choosing my best man. My father and I are very close and I consider him my best friend; would it be appropriate for me to choose him to be my best man?
Also, I served as best man for a good friend of mine who I would like to have as a groomsman (but not best man)... for some reason I am uncomfortable not choosing him because he chose me. Should I explain to him my reasoning or just say nothing?

ANSWER:
Your decision to have your father as your best man is certainly in order since he is your best friend. Usually the father is the escort for your mother or for his wife. If you do have your father as best man, be sure that your mother or his wife is provided with an escort.
My husband was asked to serve as best man for a classmate that he barely knew. He was glad to accommodate the groom, but we would have been very uncomfortable to have him as best man at our wedding in exchange. You do not owe your friend an apology for not asking him as your best man, but if explaining your own circumstances would help you enjoy your wedding, I see nothing wrong in doing so.

SUBJECT: December Wedding

Can you send me some good suggestions for a December Wedding?

ANSWER:
December weddings are perhaps the easiest and most fun to decorate. The colors, of course, can be any shade of red and green you wish, and the choice of decorations is trees lit with twinkle lights. One wedding I attended had a sleigh filled to overflowing with the wrapped wedding gifts. Another theme would be anything to do with ice. Have an ice sculpture made. Use cool blue and white and snowflakes. Get fun and add snowmen! One december bride was decked in white fur complete with a muff! Use the iceskaters theme. Add the tiny lighted collectors houses under the trees. December is one of the best times for a wedding!

SUBJECT: Rehersal Dinner

Who should be invited to the Rehersal Dinner?

ANSWER:
Invite all the people who will need to reherse the wedding with you - your brides maids, the groomsmen, the parents, of course. Then you can invite anyone else you wish! (That you can afford to invite)

SUBJECT: STEP MOTHER

I found your web site and was wondering if you could answer a question for me. My husband's oldest daughter will be getting married in October. It will be a formal wedding and I was wondering, where does the bride's step-mother sit during the ceremony? The bride's mother will be in attendance also..

ANSWER:
The problem you discribe is a sticky one, but one that is occuring more and more. It is so important that the wedding day be a memorable one for the bride and groom, and a pleasant occasion for the entire family, so the feelings of the bride should be considered when arranging the father's new wife. According to Emily Post in her book Complete Book Of Wedding Etiquette, "The bride's mother (and step-father) sit in the front pew. The bride's father (after giving her away in a Protestant ceremony) sits behind them with his second wife, as long as she is friendly with the bride."

In the many weddings I have attended I have found that on the wedding day, most divorced parents are on their best behavior and are very sensitive to the bride's feelings and are willing to do whatever will make their daughter happy on her wonderful wedding day.
