SUBJECT: PORTRAIT PHOTOS

I am a very amateur photographer and have just recently purchased a Canon EOS 500 QD with a 70-210z Vivitar lens. I really want to take portrait photos of my family, especially on special occasions. I noticed the quality of photos that are shown on your web page and would really appreciate it if you could give me some tips on how to take better photos. Such as whether I need to change my lens or decrease my ISO film speed, or maybe even some advice on background choices. Thank you very much.

ANSWER:
What you have asked would require a book to answer, and there are plenty of books out there that will help you improve the quality of your portraits.
Do you want to photograph people? or events? Action photos? or more illustrative portraiture? Landscape? My hunch is that you want to photograph it all, but you need to begin with one idea at a time and study, work and perfect it. The camera and lens you have purchased is perfect for experimental photography.
  • READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!! So many people ask me how to run their cameras and they havn't even cracked open the instruction book of their own camera. This is the best way to explore the possibilities and capabilities of your equipment. Also read the instruction booklet that came with your lens.
  • EXPERIMENT AND TAKE NOTES!!! This one key habit will make you a better photographer than many professionals. After you have experimented, studied, read your instructions and taken notes, determine what you want to accomplish. Then write back with a specific question that we can explore in a future discussion. Be sure to report and let me know how its going.

Thank You for your wonderful words!! We love hearing good things about our work. We would love to work with your family and create some memories for you. Our Studio is located in St. George, Utah which is about a 2 hour drive from Las Vegas. We are also very close to Zion National Park, Bryce National Park, Cedar Break National Monument, Brian Head Ski Resort, etc., and the list goes on. Perhaps you may want to make vacation plans to include a visit to Las Vegas and the National Parks in Southern Utah. We could plan to make a day of your portraits, taking some in and around the pictursque places near here. We love what we do and we hope it shows!!

Hi, I really like the nice portraits you guys have. I am doing a report on portrait photography as a career and I need some information. If you guys have any will you please e-mail it to me by January 6th 1998? That would mean alot to me. Thank You.

    ANSWER:
We are pleased you like our portraits. We love to create them!! As a career, photography can be fun, rewarding, and challenging!! To be a portrait photographer, you must first love people, and be able to help others feel good about themselves and how they look. If they are happy with themselves, they will have a much more natural expression and they will like their photos! You must also study Art. If you are not an artist, you cannot see what is needed to create an artistic portrait. Another thing needed in order to be a good portrait photographer is a background in business. Good business sense is imperative to keep yourself working and keeping your work paying.

    SUBJECT: WEB PAGE

Hi, I'm a photographer in Maryland. We are in the process of choosiong a webmaster and designing a website. I'm having trouble finding a qualitied person with what I feel are reasonable rates. I like your site. If you don't mind sharing informatin with me - I'd really appreciate knowing the ballpark cost for your site (that is, if you hired a webmaster). Also, would hou recommend that master? Is the site actually having the effect you want? I hope so!

    ANSWER:
Although we created our own site, we can recomment Jamye at power-tech.net (email is: jayme@power-tech.net) as an excellent web designer. He is going to put all our products in a shopping cart-type catalog, and he is (in our opinion) very reasonable. After spending hundreds of hours designing and maintaining our site, thus learning of the time involved first-hand, I think most web masters do earn their money!!!
